Over £80,000 Raised at Diverse Abilities Narnia Themed Ball

Diverse Abilities celebrated raising £82,000 at its annual gala ball, held at Poole Lighthouse, which was raising funds for the vital services the charity runs to support children and adults living with disabilities in Dorset, and their families.


Special Guests Help Charity Founder Celebrate 100th Birthday

Phyllis Edwards, the founder of Dorset charity Diverse Abilities, turned 100 on Sunday 5 November and celebrated with friends and family at Two Cedars in Broadstone, the residential care home that she has lived for five years.

Two Cedars held a tea party to celebrate her special birthday and all her guests enjoyed sandwiches, cake and a glass of prosecco to toast the birthday lady.

Tree-cycle Scheme is a Huge Success for Diverse Abilities

Diverse Abilities, Dorset’s disability charity, recently raised £3,469 by collecting Christmas trees for recycling.

Over the course of a weekend in January, 447 Christmas trees were collected from local residents in Dorset after they pre-booked their collections making a minimum of £5 donation per tree.

Volunteers gave their time and lent their vans to collect trees from Poole, Bournemouth and other areas of Dorset.

On Wednesday 14 December, staff from Diverse Abilities took to the phones with a specific goal – to call everyone who has supported the charity throughout 2016 and simply say ‘thank you’.

Throughout the day - dubbed Thank You Day - the various teams based at the Dorset charity’s Poole HQ endeavoured to call each person who had raised money, took part in a charity event or simply donated to Diverse Abilities over the course of the previous 12 months, to personally express gratitude for their act of kindness.

Julian Fellowes, Brian Blessed, Sir Tom Stoppard and rock band The Vamps are among famous names posing for ‘mugshots’ in support of the Julia’s House Time For Tea campaign this summer.

The stars join Julia’s House Patrons, Jasper Conran, Eddie Howe, Harry Redknapp, Debra Stephenson, Minette Walters and Chris Jarvis as they rally behind the children’s hospice charity’s annual tea party fundraiser.

Young volunteers’ ideas raise almost £700 for Wessex Cancer

Wessex Cancer Trust (WCT) has been working with organisations in Southampton and Bournemouth which run the local National Citizen Service (NCS) programmes.

Inspired by the work WCT carries out, two groups of young people raised nearly £700 through various fundraising activities.

Open to all 16 and 17-year-olds in England, NCS offers a way for young people from different backgrounds to learn crucial skills such as leadership, teamwork and communication, make new friends and get involved in local social action projects. Participants develop a project and spend 30 hours putting it into action within their community.

Wessex Cancer Trust tell MP about expansion plans

Volunteers from Winchester's Wessex Cancer Trust spent Thursday morning briefing Steve Brine on their plans for expansion and upcoming events, as they met at their St Georges Street base.

The team explained their long-term vision, the growing number of people they are supporting and the costs of maintaining this support, as they took the Winchester & Chandler's Ford MP around their premises.

Steve was shown the various services and rooms on offer at the Winchester Support Centre, including counselling, reflexology, reiki, aromatherapy and massage, which is open Monday to Thursday 10am-430pm.

Trio runs to raise £14K in 2014 for Isaac

A Wessex Cancer Trust (WCT) Golden Bond runner in the 2014 Virgin London Marathon has set himself the challenge of raising £14,000 in 2014 with 14 events.

Lloyd FitzGerald is running in London on April 13 with Dan Gateshill, just seven days after they tackle the Brighton Marathon, where they will be joined by Jon Course. All live in Southampton.

They are raising money for WCT, the Piam Brown unit at Southampton General Hospital and Hannah's Holiday Home, all of which supported Lloyd’s family after Lloyd and Anne’s son Isaac was diagnosed with leukaemia, aged seven, in December 2012.

Personalised social care in Southampton

Community Wessex to provide personalised social care in Southampton

Community Wessex has won a new contract from Southampton City Council and will be one of the approved suppliers of Community Outreach and Short breaks for children 3-17 years old.

Community Wessex, part of the regional charity Autism Wessex, provides personalised education, social care and overnight respite services. The contract win means Community Wessex will be one of the providers of social care for some of the 470 families waiting for support in Southampton.

Wave 105 Cash for Kids donates £5,000 to local charity

The Wave 105 Cash for Kids campaign has donated a £5,000 grant to help fund a homeless young people service in Southampton.

No Limits is a local charity that offers information, advice, counselling, advocacy and support for young people under 26 living in and around the Southampton area.

Throughout a number of fundraising events and activities in 2013, Wave 105 Cash for Kids raised £29,000 and has selected eight south coast-based charities to support.

Walking to Save Young Lives

The Purbeck Odyssey is a series of sponsored walks held each year to raise funds for Leukaemia Busters’ research into anti-body based therapies for children with incurable leukaemia.

The Purbeck Odyssey will be taking place on the 18 May and the length of the walks this year ranges from 4 miles to a 26 mile Marathon Challenge. Two of the walks also include a ride on a the Swanage Steam Railway. All the walks are based at Norden Park and Ride in Corfe Castle. The registration price starts at £10 per adult and includes the railway ticket where relevant. Children and dogs are welcome unless indicated otherwise on the walk details.

Anniversary Couples to Celebrate 45 Years with Autism Charity at Sapphire Ball

Autism Wessex is looking for local people celebrating their 45th wedding anniversary in 2013 to come and celebrate with them! Hosting their inaugural Ball to mark the 45th anniversary of the regional charity, a Sapphire themed occasion, the charity would like to gift two VIP tickets to attend the Ball to a local couple with a love story to share.
