When choosing your custom garments, deciding between polo shirts or t-shirts can be a difficult decision as they are both so similar. Both are comfortable, casual, budget friendly and handle embroidery and screen print well. How are you meant to choose when there’s so little difference? Here’s the advantages and disadvantages of both to help you pick the best garment for you, whether you’re looking to update your uniform or planning a one off event.

T-Shirts

Advantages

Like polo shirts, custom t-shirts create a casual and relaxed appearance, however even more so than polos. T-shirts can also come across as younger and more modern in their look.

Available in a greater range of colours and particularly styles when compared to polos. Whereas polo shirts may be offered in long and short sleeve, t-shirts can be can found with long/short/three quarter sleeve, varying necklines and an assortment of fabrics. This greater choice allows you to select the perfect option for your needs rather than having to settle.

Are often cheaper than polo shirts.

Disadvantages

Not as heavy duty as polos, with regular use they will show signs of wear quicker than their counterparts. They are not designed for harsh environments and a basic t-shirt would likely need replacing often in this situation. Depending on your industry some customers may automatically see t-shirts (no matter how expensive) as unprofessional and “sloppy” looking.

Polo Shirts

Advantages

Branded polo shirts are casual without being too casual. A good choice for labour intensive industries as they are comfortable and allow for easy movement whilst still being seen as professional.

Available in many different colours, with some styles now offering a slimmer “female fit” option along with standard unisex sizes, meaning no staff members have to put up with shapeless, ill-fitting uniform.

Polo shirts can withstand harsh environments easier than most other options (such as tees or button up shirts), especially the “heavy duty” or “workwear” polos.

Disadvantages

Although available at many different price points, polo shirts tend to be slightly more expensive than t-shirts. If you are planning on the garments only being worn once or twice (at an event, for example) custom t-shirts may be a better choice.

All in all, it comes down to personal preference. Go for the garment that you feel suits your business (and your budget) best. We are more then happy to help and we offer support and advise when you purchase garments from us.
